The “natural bypass”

Last updated: October 2026 · Cardio Pulse Berlin

In short

Collaterals are fine connecting vessels that are naturally present in the heart. When a vessel narrows, they can receive more flow, widen and develop over time. In this way they help supply the tissue beyond the narrowing. That is why it is called a kind of “natural bypass”: the body creates the detour itself. EECP Cardio Pulse can support this process.

How does a “natural bypass” form?

If a vessel is narrowed, the body can form detours, so-called collaterals. Because they do the same job as a surgical bypass, only grown from within, they are called a “natural bypass”. This happens slowly over weeks, and what has formed usually remains.

How does EECP help?

  • The cuffs increase blood flow in the coronary arteries.
  • The inner vessel wall releases messenger substances.
  • Fine vessels can grow.
  • Over 35 sessions, this impulse is repeated day after day.

What does the research say?

A meta-analysis of 19 randomised trials shows measurably better vascular function after EECP. The formation of collaterals is considered one of the mechanisms behind it; in humans it is harder to measure directly than vascular function.

How do we help you?

In the initial consultation we check whether EECP is right for you. At the end of the course we compare what has changed.
